  • 40 days of Lent 2022

Wednesday, March 2nd to Saturday April 16th

Hmmm?!  I’ve never been good at Mathematics but I counted more than 40 days! As BathCAN are now starting work on this years Lent Prayer book I thought I better get it right and find out why!

Is Lent 40 days ?
Lent for Christians starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on either the evening of Maundy Thursday or on sundown of Holy Saturday (day before Easter Sunday). However the practices of Lent do not end until sundown on Holy Saturday for all Christian denominations. So it is 44 days from Ash Wednesday to Maundy Thursday and another two days with Good Friday and Holy Saturday added to give a total of 46 days for Lent. But Sundays are excluded from fasting during Lent and with 6 Sundays removed from the count we get lent being a 40 day liturgical period.

Phew!  40 days it is,  40 prayer requests I need.

Please let me have the requests on your heart for prayer by emailing BathCAN at info@bathcan.org.uk we really want to include these in the 2022 Lent Prayers.

Let’s start Lent Prayers together at

Bath Abbey on Tuesday 1st March at 7.30pm so we  can join together and Pray for Bath followed by pancakes and fellowship

Also, don’t miss out on the Lent Prayer requests and other Christian communication across Bath by subscribing on the BathCAN website here.

  • Rev Stephen Girling, Bath Abbey

Living in Love and Faith. Join the conversation

In the comfortable new offices of Bath Abbey on a very cold frosty January I met with Rev Stephen Girling to find out what 2022 holds for the Church of England in Bath.  Stephen (as he said I could call him) joined Bath Abbey’s clergy team in 2015.  He is the Abbey Missioner.

Explaining his role he said “I am responsible for the outward facing work of the Abbey in the city.  This could be with Universities, the Mayors offices, Artists, other church’s and all sorts of other people who may want to do things with the Abbey.  I’m also responsible as a member of the Clergy, for how we communicate the Christian faith and the worship and prayer-life of the Abbey to our visitors as a place of Christian Worship.  I’m also the Area Dean of Bath which is an Anglican Term and that means I have oversight responsibility for the thirty plus Church of England Churches in the city and villages”

Asking about the broad “styles” of worship Stephen spoke of the Evangelical impact of Charles Simeon [an Anglican clergyman and biblical commentator born in 1759 and who led the Evangelical movement, in reaction to the Liturgically and Episcopally oriented High Church party].

To hear about this and what he has to say about the National Initiative Living in Love and Faith: Conversations around sexuality, marriage and gender, click on the audio below.

If you want to get involved in the conversations, there are courses being run through Bath Abbey  and other churches here.

  • Coffee Break

with Mike Smith member of Life Church, The Forum, Bath

Have you driven through Twerton and seen people litter picking?  digging, weeding or planting in communal areas? that may well have been Mike Smith.   Mike goes to Life Church and is a retired Police Inspector who moved to Bath from North Hampton with his wife in April 2018.  Very soon Mike felt a calling on his heart for Twerton and wanted to use his time to show the love of Jesus by volunteering in the area.  Every Tuesday, come rain (more often than not!) or shine, Mike and others are out and about in Twerton.  On drizzly day in January I invited him to join me for coffee in the Rose Cottage Cafe to listen to his story and find out what is so special about Twerton.  Join us for a coffee by listening to the audio below.

  • Volunteering in Twerton

with Time Bank Plus

Time Bank Plus is a small charity based in Twerton, Bath, which helps people to engage with their local community. Activities range from facilitating individual time and skills exchanges to setting up groups, courses, projects and community events.  It is all about exchange and involvement, which members and staff of Time Bank believe helps people to feel useful and positive about themselves.

If you walk into Time Bank on the High Street you will see either Viv Talbot the full time member of staff or  Rowan Wynne-Jones [who works one day a week in the office].  I popped in to see them recently to find out what is on their mind.  Like so many third sector organisations, the answer is so often “funding”.   This was hidden under the positivity, enthusiasm and joy with which Rowan and Viv talked about the work and people they come across in Twerton.

It is wonderful to see people in the community connect with one another – helping each other, sharing skills, and getting to know their neighbours. We run many fantastic groups that help a wide

range of people to connect with one another. Some of the groups we run include: litter picking; art groups; a lunch club; walking groups; a food co-op; and gardening opportunities. We are always looking for new members to join us.

Feelgood Walks are taking place on Tuesdays at 12.30pm from the Time Bank office at 86 High Street, Twerton, BA2 1DE and Viv is always keen to find more volunteers who are able to take part in those walks.

  • Uniting Bathford and  Batheaston

From the Church Wardens of St John’s Batheaston and St Swithun’s Bathford

Creating a United Benefice of the parishes of Bathford and Batheaston has been thought about, and even talked about, for quite some years now. Following Rev Sally Buddle’s departure from Bathford last August, steps are now being taken to make this reorganisation a reality.  The legal steps for achieving such a pastoral reorganisation are in hand but may well take quite a time to be completed. The Diocese, after consulting the two parishes, has therefore decided that the process of finding Sally’s successor will take place as if the unification has already been completed. Both parishes will have an equal interest in writing a Benefice Profile and interviewing possible candidates. The new vicar when appointed will take responsibility for both parishes. The Diocese will decide on how this will be done depending on where the legal processes in creating the united benefice have got to by the time of the formal Licensing of the incumbent.

It is hoped that this new post will be filled in Autumn, ideally in September to align with the start of the new school year. The Rev Elizabeth Bennett is currently Associate Priest at Batheaston and, subject to her wishes, the intention is that she will remain in this post under the new benefice arrangements.

  • City Leaders in the The Upper Room

A number of city leaders are gathering monthly to be together before the Lord on behalf of the city.
The invitation is to anyone who is currently leading a kingdom initiative, which comes out of an ongoing relationship with other leaders.  Based around a longing for greater oneness and true friendship, the mornings are a mix of worship, prayer and looking to engage with God’s agenda in this urgent hour.  We truly believe that ‘all being together in one place’ is needed at the heart of kingdom leadership in Bath.

The mornings are from 8.45am to 11am, with coffee and fellowship. 2022 dates are :

February 10th, March 10th, April 7th, May 12th, June 9th, July 7th
The venue is St Andrew’s church centre, Foxhill, Bath.
